Doorbell camera captures SUV, gunfire in Northside shooting that left 4-year-old, mother injured

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Gunshots were heard on a doorbell camera shortly after a light-colored SUV drove down a Northside street.

Police said the gunshots fired late Wednesday night in the Biscayne area hit a mother and her 4-year-old child.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. in the Oak Brook Subdivision on Oaklawn Road.

The two were sitting in the car in the driveway after dropping off a loved one at the house.

Family members told News4JAX that as they were about to get out of the car someone drove up and started shooting.

Police don’t have any information on a suspect right now.

According to the family, the mother is in the ICU with a broken rib and a bullet lodged in her lung and kidney. Her 4-year-old daughter was shot in the arm and leg. A bullet grazed her eye.

The family is now asking for prayers and for those responsible for this to be found.

The beginning of the 30-second home security video obtained by News4JAX showed taillights just out of view. A few seconds later, what appears to be a light-colored SUV drives by and leaves the frame at 10 seconds. Right now, it’s not confirmed those vehicles were involved in the shooting. Then, 17 seconds later, gunfire erupted.

The video stopped after that and no vehicles were seen leaving the dead-end road because according to the doorbell camera owner, it only picks up one side of the road.

Another video clip showed police driving down the street a short time later.

On Thursday afternoon, there was still broken glass in the driveway and an SUV with shattered windows and bullet holes. There was also evidence markers on the house and children’s toys in the front.

A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified said she didn’t hear the gunshots but heard the police response.

She said no one — let alone a child — deserves this.

“It’s disturbing, you know, to think that something like that could happen. And so it has me thinking, you know, about whether now this is a safe neighborhood,” she said.

A sign at the front of the community said it’s under 24-hour surveillance and there’s a neighborhood watch. There is only one road in and one road out. The shooting happened at the far back of the subdivision. Whoever is responsible for the shooting had to drive down the road, turn around in the cul-de-sac and go back out the same way they came in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact JSO.
