Child dies in tubing incident in Putnam County: FWC

HAWTHORNE, Fla. – A tragic tubing accident in Putnam County left one child dead and two others injured on Tuesday, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

The incident was reported on Star Lake in Hawthorne on the Putnam-Alachua County line.

FWC told News4JAX that its officers, along with Putnam County deputies, responded Tuesday to a reported boating incident involving a tube being towed by a personal watercraft.

According to a report from WCJB, a Putnam County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson described the children involved in the incident as being 8, 10, and 11 years old.

FWC adds that the two other children involved were taken to the hospital.

The lake where the incident occurred stretches across more than 230 acres in the Hawthorne community.

FWC continues to say that the investigation into what exactly led to the incident is active, and released the following statement.

The FWC extends its heartfelt condolences to the family affected by this devastating event.
