JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When Audriena Hutchinson looks at her favorite modeling photo, her face lights up.
“I love this picture right here; I love that picture,” she said with a laugh, pointing proudly at an image that captured more than just a pose—it captured a lifelong dream fulfilled.
After serving 22 years in the United States Navy, Hutchinson retired and pursued something she’d always wanted: modeling. The photo symbolized freedom, joy, and a new beginning.
But just months later, everything changed.
A Thanksgiving that changed everything
It was a typical Thanksgiving morning in 2012. Hutchinson’s mother, Donna, was in the kitchen, preparing dinner. The two had been chatting earlier, sharing stories from the night before.
“She had been out with her friends,” Donna recalled. “And I’m in the kitchen slaving…” she laughed.
Moments later, the laughter faded.
When Donna called for her daughter, there was no answer.
“She was between the bathtub and the toilet, down on her side,” Donna remembered. “Her mouth was moving, but nothing was coming out.”
Audriena suffered a massive stroke, sudden and severe. Doctors rushed to perform two surgeries in as many days, trying desperately to stop the bleeding and uncover what caused the clot that nearly took her life.
But the cause was never found.
“Usually, they can tell where it came from,” Donna said. “But he said there’s no evidence in her body of where that blood clot came from.”
The long road back
The stroke left Hutchinson partially paralyzed on her right side and struggling with memory and speech. Yet, through every setback, she fought to reclaim her life—with her mother by her side.
“She had a hard time with memory, and her words sometimes come out plain, sometimes don’t,” Donna said.
At home, the two share laughter, photos, and small victories. Donna helps her daughter walk, cook, and reminisce over the photo albums that line their living room shelves—each one filled with moments that tell their story.
Finding help and hope
Support came from a place they least expected: ElderSource, a local organization dedicated to helping seniors and adults with disabilities live independently.
“To this day, the people are really on the money,” Donna said. “They usually call to see how everything is going.”
Through ElderSource, the Hutchinsons found not only services but also a renewed sense of community and care.

Living with gratitude
Despite the challenges, Audriena’s radiant smile hasn’t faded.
“Just live life to the fullest while you can, one day at a time,” Donna said. “Be thankful for each day that you see, because you never know when something might happen that might change everything.”
For the Hutchinsons, the photo albums that once showcased modeling shoots and Navy memories now tell a deeper story—one of strength, faith, and love that time can never erase.
“That’s one thing,” Audriena adds, flipping through the pages. “Lots of pictures, always memories.”
And now, with one more photo, they allowed News4JAX to create another memory to keep.
