Woman dies after being struck by car backing out of driveway, driver says he didn’t know she was there: JSO

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman died after she was struck by a car that was backing out of a driveway early Saturday morning, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials said the crash happened around 12:25 a.m. in the 5000 block of Brait Avenue. A man in his early 70s backed a newer sedan out of his driveway and hit a woman in her mid-60s, JSO said.

The man told JSO that he did not know the woman was behind his car. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department arrived and said the woman died at the scene.

JSO is investigating the incident. This is the 147th traffic fatality in Duval County in 2026.
