JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was killed Sunday night in what police described as a road-rage shootout on Edgewood Avenue West and I-95 in the Lake Forest area of Northwest Jacksonville.
Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office are now searching for the driver of a small silver SUV in connection with the deadly shooting.
Officers responded around 8:20 p.m. to reports of a shooting on Edgewood Avenue West. When they arrived, they found a man in his mid- to late-30s with a gunshot wound to the chest.
The man died at the scene.
Authorities said the incident began as a road-rage confrontation between two drivers, one of whom was a man driving a small silver SUV.
The dispute continued onto the northbound ramp to I-95, with the SUV traveling westbound. Both vehicles came to a stop, and both drivers got out armed with handguns, officials said.
“They got into a shootout,” said Sgt. Steve Rudlaff, with JSO’s homicide unit. “We are hoping to get video in the area of the actual vehicle. We do have several witnesses who remained at the scene who saw the road rage and saw the vehicles pull over and both (drivers) exiting their vehicles.”
No other vehicles were involved or affected during the incident.
Police said this appears to be an isolated incident, but they must locate the driver of the SUV to continue their investigation.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500.
