JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville is taking time to honor and remember veterans through various events during Memorial Day Weekend.
Hundreds of flags began waving in Jacksonville’s Memorial Park on Saturday morning, each one representing a hero — military or otherwise.

“Could be law enforcement, could be first responders, teachers, parents - whoever they want to honor,” said Bob Kidd of the Rotary Club of Riverside Jacksonville.
The Rotary Club of Riverside Jacksonville organized the “Flags for Heroes” display for the third consecutive year, planting nearly 500 individually sponsored flags throughout the park. Each flag bears the name of a hero chosen by the sponsor.
Kidd described the event as one of the most meaningful missions he has been a part of.
“I can’t think of a better event that honors America,” he said.
The display also drew help from the FDR Naval Sea Cadets based at NAS Jacksonville. Nearly 15 cadets of all ages volunteered to help set up the flags, earning volunteer ribbons while gaining a broader appreciation for service.
“This gives them a good sense of patriotism, pride [and] self-reliance,” said Lt. Tony Woodfin.
The flags in Memorial Park will remain on display through the end of the Navy Band performance Monday night. That free event begins at 6 p.m.
The spirit of Memorial Day extended beyond Memorial Park. A ceremony was also held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, where flags served as symbols of honor and respect on hallowed ground.
“It’s an opportunity just to reflect and take a pause and think about the history of our country and all those that have served,” Woodfin said.
