St. Johns County, Fla. – A deadly two-vehicle crash on State Road 16 involved a 30-year-old St. Johns County deputy, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 8:20 p.m. on Saturday, a 68-year-old man from St. Augustine was turning left onto State Road 16 eastbound from the Stratton Boulevard intersection. According to the report from Florida Highway Patrol, he pulled out in front of the deputy, who was traveling west on State Road 16 in the left lane.

The front of the deputy’s car collided with the driver’s side of the man’s car. The man’s vehicle rotated and came to rest in the left turn lane of State Road 16 eastbound.

The deputy’s car crossed all eastbound lanes and collided with a stop sign.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle died at the scene.

The driver who died was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, while the deputy was not.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

Stratton Boulevard on State Road 16 was closed in all directions after the crash. It fully re-opened at about 2 a.m. on Sunday.
