CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – A News4JAX viewer captured video of a dust devil spawning and spinning up dirt and dust in Green Cove Springs.
The video was uploaded to SnapJAX by user ‘huffstetlertommy’.
The tower of whirling dust appeared to be at least 20 feet high.
This isn’t the first time an impressive dust devil has been caught on camera in the area.
A dust devil quickly formed during a baseball game at the Fort Caroline Athletic Association baseball field in 2023.
In a video shared with News4JAX, Bauer Zoya, 7, a catcher for the Ponte Vedra Sharks, is seen being engulfed by the short-lived whirlwind.
What is a dust devil?
According to the National Weather Service, a dust devil is a small, rapidly rotating wind made visible by the dust, dirt or debris it picks up. Also called a whirlwind, it typically develops on clear, dry, hot afternoons due to intense surface heating.
