A beautiful day ahead, get outside

. (.)

Coastal flooding and dangerous beach conditions are our main weather stories, despite plenty of sunshine today. After a cool start in the 50s, afternoon highs reach the mid to upper 70s with northeast winds around 6–11 mph, gusting near 17 mph. Tonight stays clear with lows in the upper 50s. Friday remains sunny, but northeast winds strengthen to 8–18 mph with gusts around 25 mph and highs in the lower to mid-70s.

Minor tidal flooding continues around high tide within the St. Johns River basin, Intracoastal Waterway and portions of the Northeast Florida coast, including Flagler County. Water levels could reach roughly 1.5–1.9 feet above normally dry ground in affected areas, flooding vulnerable roads, parking lots and low-lying locations. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for portions of the area.

The bigger concern is increasing tidal flooding Saturday morning through Monday. Another surge of strong onshore winds, combined with higher astronomical tides surrounding the full moon, could produce moderate flooding along the Atlantic coast, Intracoastal Waterway and St. Johns River basin. Water could reach around 2.5 feet above normally dry ground in vulnerable coastal and Intracoastal locations, potentially affecting roads and some structures. Moderate beach erosion is also possible. Coastal Flood Watches or Warnings may become necessary as the event approaches.

A high risk of rip currents continues today through Friday at beaches from St. Simons Island through Flagler Beach, with breakers of 3–6 feet. Our message: sunny weather does not mean safe swimming conditions. Stay out of the ocean and follow beach patrol guidance.

The weekend also turns cloudier, windy and wetter. Saturday has the highest rain chance at 70%, with highs near 72. Sunday brings a 40% chance of showers, mainly during the afternoon, with highs near 71. Windy conditions continue into Monday with a 30% chance of showers and highs in the lower 70s. For coverage planning, coastal flooding around high tide, worsening beach conditions and Saturday’s rain are the priorities heading into the weekend
