1 dead, 2 injured in Westside shooting

Shooting happened in home on North Raw Hyde Trail

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man died and two juvenile females were injured Saturday in a shooting at a home on the Westside in the city’s Cedar Hills Estates neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting happened at a home on North Raw Hyde Trail just north of the Virginia Arms Apartments, where a shooting happened in February.

Multiple people were inside the home when the shooting happened, police said. Authorities have not released any information regarding the people inside who were not shot. Police are working with witnesses and a family member to figure out what led to the shooting.

Police have not released any information regarding the man who was killed.

News4Jax spoke with neighbors who said they didn't hear the shooting last night, but it doesn't surprise them. The woman who lives across the street said that after more than a year in her home, she's ready to go and stop worrying if she'll end up in the crossfire.

“Every time you look up, all you hear is pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. I don't know about them, but I get on the floor, for real. I ain't playing,” the woman said. “It don't make sense the way they are shooting.”

A woman who didn't want to be identified said that she has woken up to crime scene tape multiple times.

“Every time I turn on channel 4, somebody got shot or something done happened,” the woman said. “None of it makes sense. Why can't we live without all this stupid mess right here?”

According to records, there have been a variety of crimes committed this year within a half-mile of the shooting.

News4Jax found the following crimes in the area since Jan.1:

  • 25 assaults
  • 22 burglaries
  • 4 robberies
  • 2 homicides

Family members of others inside the house came to the scene confused and unsure about what was happening. One man said that he thought his teenage stepson was shot, but he was not.

Police said they interviewed that teen and others inside the home trying to find out who the shooter is and whether this was random or not.

The two juveniles shot were taken to an area hospital and are expected to be OK.
