Police ID man shot, killed on West 17th Street

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 29-year-old man shot and killed Saturday in the city's Mid-Westside neighborhood has been identified, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police said they were called about 3 p.m. to West 17th Street and Moncrief Road and found Anthony Edward Lee Myers dead.

"I was at work when my mom called, and she said she had just arrived home," said family friend LaTorie Williams. "They had just pulled up and as soon as she walked in the door, she heard numerous gunshots."

Williams is one of several who showed up to the scene moments after police told News4Jax a man was shot dead.

Williams said that man was her son's best friend. She said she got a call about the shooting as she was leaving work.

"When I got the phone call that someone was dead in my mom's yard, my heart fluttered," Williams said. "I couldn't even breathe because I was thinking it's one of my sons."

Williams said her son and the man who was shot have known each other since age 11. She said her mom heard several gunshots and she ran inside.

Police told News4Jax there were no witnesses and no suspects in custody.

"It's just a really sad time. I mean, it's like so much killing, day after day," Williams said. "It's always sad when a life is taken, regardless of what the circumstances are."

Police need the public's help with the investigation. Anyone who has information regarding the shooting is asked to call the JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-645-TIPS.
