Rank, school, record, classification

1. Fleming Island (3-0, Class 2A)

Notable wins: Middleburg, New Smyrna Beach, Stanton.

Glance: Our wire-to-wire No. 1 team last year opens at the top. That should surprise no one, especially with how well Fleming has started on defense. The Golden Eagles had outscored three teams by a combined 27-2. They beat a very good Stanton 7-0 their last time out. There’s no Mykala Maddox in the lineup this year, but Fleming still has notables like London Jenkins, Gabi Musa and Devyn Dudones back to lead the way. Fleming hasn’t lost to a local team since a 21-13 game to Middleburg on April 4, 2022.

2. Stanton (2-1, Class 1A)

Notable wins: Fletcher, Yulee.

Glance: The Blue Devils were in the conversation as one of the area’s top three teams in 2023. They’re right back in that discussion this year. They played No. 1 Fleming Island tight (7-0 loss) and they’ll be expected to contend for the Gateway Conference crown.

3. Paxon (3-0, Class 1A)

Notable wins: None.

Glance: The Golden Eagles were 13-4 last year, with three of those losses coming to Stanton. Can they close the gap this year? Senior Ansley Hicks leads what should be an excellent Paxon squad. They get a major test at the No. 2 Blue Devils on Thursday night.

4. Bradford (1-1, Class 1A)

Notable wins: None.

Glance: This team was a juggernaut last year, racking up 16 wins behind a lethal all-around team before Paxon pulled the upset in the playoffs. If Bradford can recapture just a fraction of the production it had in 2023, watch out. They’ve routed Ridgeview (39-13) and then lost to Trinity Catholic (18-13) thus far.

5. Middleburg (2-1, Class 1A)

Notable wins: Keystone Heights, White.

Glance: The Broncos slipped to 4-8 last year, a drastic shift from a 16-1 season in 2022. Can they get back into form this season? Early returns suggest yes. They played Fleming Island tight (13-0) and then bounced back to beat White (13-6) and Keystone Heights (30-6). There’s a big game against Florida Deaf on March 5, a game that the Broncos lost last year.

6. White (3-1, Class 1A)

Notable wins: None.

Glance: The Commanders always seem to be solid and this year won’t be a deviation from that. The loss is a 13-6 game to No. 5 Middleburg, so not a bad one. Games against Sandalwood and Fletcher next Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, will be big challenges for the Commanders.

Others

Atlantic Coast (0-1, Class 2A); Clay (0-0, Class 1A); Fletcher (0-1, Class 2A); Florida Deaf (2-0, Class 1A); Mandarin (2-1, Class 2A); Raines (2-0, Class 1A).
