Varsity 4 News4JAX Super 10 rankings
Rank, (previous), school, record last year, classification
1. (3) St. Augustine (3-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 1 (3).
Last week: Beat Bolles, 40-35. This week: at Riverside (0-3), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: Huge win for the Yellow Jackets. QB Brenton James played like a veteran in the game and authored his first signature win. St. Augustine should win relatively easy this week before two colossal games at Nease (Sept. 19) and home against Columbia (Sept. 26).
2. (2) Raines (2-0, Class 3A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 2 (2).
Last week: Beat Trinity Christian, 48-14. This week: at Lake Mary (2-1).
Why they’re here: The Vikings walloped Trinity for the first time and now face their most difficult opponent of the regular season. If Raines can get past Lake Mary, there’s not an opponent left that will stay within two touchdowns of the Vikings. I thought about moving Raines up to the top spot, but the lack of competition (their opponents are a combined 0-6) is steered me away.
3. (1) Bolles (2-1, Class 2A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 3 (1).
Last week: Lost to St. Augustine, 40-35. This week: at (10) Bishop Kenny (2-0).
Why they’re here: The Bulldogs drop from the No. 1 spot after a tough loss to St. Augustine. The defense has got to be better than it was last week if Bolles has hopes of adding another state championship.
4. (4) Oakleaf (3-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 6 (6).
Last week: Beat Fleming Island, 31-0. This week: vs. Hawthorne (3-0).
Why they’re here: The Knights passed their first big challenge of the season last week in a romp over Fleming Island. This week will be an even greater challenge. Hawthorne is one of the state’s best teams in the Rural class.
5. (6) Nease (3-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 5 (5).
Last week: Beat Tallahassee Lincoln, 47-10. This week: at Fletcher (3-0), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Panthers trade spots with Mandarin after a thorough thumping of previously unbeaten Tallahassee Lincoln. They’ve got two high quality wins this season (Ponte Vedra, Lincoln) and could get another this week if they can get past Fletcher.
6. (5) Mandarin (3-0, Class 6A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 3 (4).
Last week: Beat Sandalwood, 42-0. This week: vs. (8) Bradford (3-0), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Mustangs are rolling, albeit against lesser competition (combined record of 1-8). Things jump up considerably the next two weeks with games against Bradford and IMG Academy.
7. (6) Bradford (3-0, Class 2A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 8 (8).
Last week: Beat South Sumter, 14-12.This week: at (6) Mandarin (3-0), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Tornadoes answered their first major challenge of the season by muscling up and edging South Sumter in a playoff-like test. Can they make it two in a row over Mandarin this week?
8. (8) Columbia (3-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 7 (7).
Last week: Beat Hillsborough, 39-0.This week: at Madison County (1-2), 7:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Tigers are legit. A trip to Boot Hill and Madison County is always a big test. But the real challenge this month awaits on Sept. 26 with a trip to visit St. Augustine.
9. (9) White (2-0, Class 4A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 9 (9).
Last week: Beat Westside, 65-0. This week: at Englewood (0-3), 6:30 p.m.
Why they’re here: The Commanders, like Raines, have wins over teams who are a combined 0-6. This week will be another running clock. There’s a good chance the Commanders will roll into their Oct. 17 game against Oakleaf unbeaten.
10. (NR) Bishop Kenny (2-0, Class 3A)
Coaches Super 10 ranking (previous ranking): 10 (10)
Last week: Beat Tocoi Creek, 35-14.This week: vs. (3) Bolles (2-1).
Why they’re here: Two quality wins out of the gate for the Crusaders. Can they stay hot and beat Bolles for the second time since 2022?
