1. (T1) Ponte Vedra (14-0, Class 3A)
Notable wins: Bartram Trail, Chiles, Fletcher, Land O’Lakes, Nease, Paxon, Sandalwood, St. Augustine, Stanton, Tocoi Creek, Yulee.
Glance: The Sharks ended the regular season as the unquestioned top team in the area. They ranked either No. 2 or tied for first from the outset, and really should have been solo first from the get go. I look at a game between Chiles and the Sharks, won 25-6 by Ponte Vedra. Chiles doubled up previously unbeaten Clay 26-13 this week to knock the Blue Devils from the ranks of the unbeaten. Izzy Murray has 52 TD passes and 3,476 yards this season. Peyton Gruver and Julia Conroy have combined for 34 TD catches. Conroy also has 14 interceptions on defense, followed by Gruver’s eight. Maddy McDermott has 13 sacks. The big task now for the second-year team is converting this dominance to postseason success. Ponte Vedra and head coach Scott Conroy have a real shot to be the last local team left standing this year.
2. (3) Bartram Trail (14-1, Class 3A)
Notable win: Atlantic Coast, Baker County, Fleming Island, Middleburg, Nease.
Glance: The Bears went wrapped up the third regular season in program history with an 35-19 win over Middleburg since our last Super 6. Their only loss (13-6) was to No. 1 Ponte Vedra. Kaila Pierce has thrown 47 TD passes, a combined 27 of those to Riley Abelon and Bralynne McDonald. Riley Johnson and Izzy Romero lead the defense with a combined 17 interceptions. Romero leads the team with 80 flag pulls.
3. (4) Paxon (12-1, Class 2A)
Notable wins: Bradford, Fleming Island, Mandarin, Nease, Sandalwood, Stanton, Tocoi Creek.
Glance: The Golden Eagles won the Gateway Conference tournament, thumping Mandarin 26-0, and followed that with a quality 19-14 win over Nease since our last Super 6. Their only loss (13-0) came to No. 1 Ponte Vedra. Elyanna Perez has 29 TD passes for the Golden Eagles. Treasure Curry has 12 TD catches and 54 flag pulls, tops on the team in both of those categories.
4. (T1) Clay (11-1, Class 2A)
Notable wins: Fleming Island, Santa Fe, St. Augustine, Tocoi Creek, White.
Glance: Hate to drop the Blue Devils here after going unbeaten, but the schedule discrepancy is what made the decision easier. It’s been an excellent season for the Blue Devils, I just wondered what would happen when they ran into a challenging opponent for the first time. The schedule has lacked upper tier competition, and it showed. Chiles ended the perfect start with a 26-13 win. Clay had outscored teams 414-0 entering that game. They added a 24-0 romp over Fleming Island, too. Now’s the chance for Clay to reset and get back on track as the district tournament begins.
5. (5) Mandarin (12-1, Class 4A)
Notable wins: Baker County, Bolles, Ribault, Sandalwood, St. Augustine, Stanton.
Glance: The Mustangs came up short against Paxon in the Gateway Conference championship game, but routed Raines (33-13) in a bounceback game. They wrap up the regular season on Wednesday against Nease. Cameron Latsko has thrown 26 TD passes for Mandarin, 12 of those to Akaylah Hewett.
6. (6) Bolles (10-2, Class 1A)
Notable wins: Atlantic Coast, Baker County, Fleming Island, Sandalwood, Tocoi Creek, University Christian, Yulee.
Glance: The Bulldogs beat Atlantic Coast (32-0) and Stanton (6-0) since our last Super 6. They go into their regular season finale of their first season on a four-game winning streak. Kayla Bliss has 24 TD passes for Bolles, a combined 11 of those going to Patricia Freeman and Alexa Clutter. Freeman and Leila Goll have a combined 16 interceptions for the defense.
