Varsity 4 All-News4JAX flag football: Izzy Murray just getting warmed up for Ponte Vedra

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Izzy Murray isn’t your normal flag football quarterback.

Her varsity resume at Ponte Vedra High School may say two years, but Murray has been a force for longer than that.

The Sharks were the area’s unquestioned top team all season long, cruising to 19 consecutive wins before falling a game short of the state semifinals. Murray was at the forefront of that Sharks machine.

The Varsity 4 All-News4JAX flag football player of the year had one of the best statistical seasons ever by a local flag athlete. Murray accounted for 79 touchdowns (71 passing, seven rushing, one receiving) and led the Sharks in total flag pulls, too.

“I really just think it was our love for each other and determination. We really wanted it this year,” Murray said. “We had a few seniors that aren’t with us anymore, so that was a huge motivation; trying to get the furthest we could for them, for each other, and that really drove us.”

Ponte Vedra has been the blueprint for quick success.

The Sharks and head coach Scott Conroy may have played their first season in 2025, but they were far from a true first-year team. In fact, Murray and several players had quite a bit of flag experience long before they first suited up in high school.

Murray played for the Jaguars flag team and made herself a well-known athlete there well before the Sharks even took a snap.

“I think getting into it was just for fun with a few of my friends, and then I ended up really liking it and being pretty good at it,” Murray said.

In their first season as a team in 2025, the Sharks finished 14-3 as Murray and freshman receivers Peyton Gruver and Julia Conroy strafed defenses. Murray tossed 36 TDs, a combined 31 of those going to Conroy, Gruver and Taylor Burke. As a much better known program this year, the Sharks raised their game and blasted opponents on a regular basis.

Not only were the Sharks good, but they were also elite-level good against very good competition. Ponte Vedra had just two games in the regular season that were remotely close (13-6 over Bartram Trail, 12-7 over Land O’Lakes). Every other game was a win by 13 points or more.

“Individually, I think the success was just wanting to make my teammates proud, the people around me proud, and just all around, like doing it for the people that I love and hopefully finishing with a strong season,” Murray said.
