It’s been an excellent showing for local athletes in the USA Track and Field Toyota Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium in New York.
Episcopal graduate Garrett Scantling won the men’s decathlon with 8,526 points, topping Kyle Garland (8,431) across the two-day event that consists of 10 individual events. Scantling won the long jump, shot put, 110 hurdles and the javelin throw.

Now 33 years old, Scantling is seeking to make his second Olympics team. He was fourth in the Tokyo Games in 2021, narrowly missing out on the podium. Scantling wasn’t eligible for the 2024 Games after a suspension for several random drug tests that he wasn’t around to take.
Nease graduate Rheinhardt Harrison finished third in the 1500-meter run, clocking a time of 3 minutes, 50.65 seconds. Winner Nathan Green was narrowly in front of Harrison at 3:50.27.
Harrison was the first Florida runner to break the four-minute mile barrier in high school, clocking a time of 3:59.33 in the Golden South Series No. 2 meet at East Lake High School in 2022.
