Penguin Random House, PEN America team up to Book the Vote

NEW YORK – Neil Gaiman, Anita Hill and Ann Patchett will be among the contributors to Book the Vote, an online initiative to provide information on the electoral system, voting registration and civic topics. Book the Vote is a collaboration among Penguin Random House, PEN America, the non-profit organization When We All Vote and the literary retailer Out of Print, which is owned by Penguin Random House. One feature is called “How America Works” and covers four topics: the right to vote, voting for the president, the Supreme Court and the electoral college. “Truth, facts, press freedom, and the future of open discourse are all on the ballot this November,” PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel said in a statement. Noseel and Penguin Random House U.S. CEO Madeline McIntosh said they were pleased to be working together to provide credible and authoritative information about the U.S. election and voting rights.

Online fall Broadway play revivals attract starry casts

NEW YORK – Broadway theaters may be dark, but there will be plenty of new online productions of some of classic plays this fall with some starry self-isolating actors, including Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Patti LuPone, Laura Linney and David Alan Grier. Producer Jeffrey Richards on Wednesday unveiled a weekly play run of livestreamed works to benefit The Actors Fund. They will stream on Broadway’s Best Shows and ticket buyers can access the events through TodayTix starting at $5. David Mamet’s ”Race" is up on Oct. 29, starring David Alan Grier and Ed O’Neill. Mamet’s “Boston Marriage” is slated for Nov. 12 with Patti LuPone and Rebecca Pidgeon.

Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Inn riots and while the anniversary is a time to reflect on how far the gay rights movement has come, Emmy-nominated actor Alan Cumming said it's also crucial to stay "vigilant" when looking towards the future. "We've got to be vigilant and gird our loins," he added. The actor, who also threw an anniversary celebration at his own bar, Club Cumming, is currently the executive director of the CBS show "Instinct." There's never been a gay leading character in a network drama?' "When you think about it, I always think it's weird that when people talk about me they say 'gay actor' or 'queer actor '" he added.
