Show goes on for Olivier Awards, even with UK theaters shut

McKellen won a special Olivier โ his seventh โ for his one-man 80th birthday tour of the U.K., staged before the pandemic as a fundraiser for regional theaters. A handful of theaters have reopened to reduced, socially distanced audiences, but many are still shut and relying on emergency funding from the government to stay afloat. Olivier organizers say the next awards ceremony will likely not be until 2022, because so little work has been staged this year.

When asked how he feels about playing the show's "hot priest," he responded, "It's inescapable! "I think it's important to say that the character is called 'priest' in the script when I read it. "I think I would have been a little bit intimidated had it been called 'hot priest.' As fans know, the Irish actor's character is a man of the cloth, who Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) falls hard for in season two. "People are just obsessed with if they're ever gonna get back together," Scott said, when asked what feedback he's received for the role.

The Oscar-winning actress leads a star-studded cast in Amazons upcoming anthology series Modern Love, adapted from the New York Times popular column of the same name. The first trailer gives a taste of the upcoming stories, varying from romantic love to sibling love to familial love. John Carney serves as writer, director and executive producer of Modern Love, with Sharon Horgan and Emmy Rossum directing episodes. All eight episodes of Modern Love debut Friday, Oct. 18 on Amazon Prime.
