Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the military to provide dozens of lawyers to the Justice Department for temporary assignments in Memphis and near the U.S.-Mexico border that could run through next fall.

An inmate at the Camden County Detention Facility has been charged with providing the drugs resulting in another inmate’s death by overdose, according to U.S. Attorney Bobby Christine. “It’s particularly disturbing to learn of this poison’s presence as contraband in a detention facility.”The investigation began May 17 when an inmate at the Camden County Detention Facility identified as J.D. The indictment alleges that Swing provided the fentanyl to J.D. The case is being investigated by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at the request of the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. “The death of any person is a tragedy, but a death caused as a result of illegal narcotic distribution is even more terrible for the families of victims,” Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk said.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. The second of two men charged in a drug trafficking conspiracy implicated in a womans overdose death has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison. Judge Wood had already sentenced Donald Adams, 63, of Brunswick, to 126 months in prison on the same charge. Makeda Atkinson and Donald Adams were small-time drug dealers until their poison fueled the overdose death of a young mother whose body was found by her 5-year-old daughter, U.S. Attorney Bobby Christine said. Glynn County Criminal Investigator Stephen Lowery took the lead in investigating the womans death and, working with the FBI, linked it to fentanyl-tainted heroin sold by Atkinson and Adams. Atkinson and his co-defendant played a significant role in the death of a young mother poisoned by the drugs they were pushing, said Chris Hacker, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. A Glynn County woman has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of stolen firearms. Elaina Carter, 38, was sentenced to 57 months followed by three years of supervised release, according to the Department of Justice. She is not eligible for paroleAccording to court documents and testimony, Carter stole and pawned numerous items from June 2018 to January 2019, including 37 firearms. Its fortunate that she sold these stolen guns to licensed dealers, and that vigilant law enforcement officers brought an end to her serial thefts.Records show she has previous convictions on state charges in Glynn County for burglary, theft by receiving, and theft by deception. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Glynn County Police Department.

Elizabeth McAlister, 80, from New London, Connecticut, was also ordered to pay $33,500 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release. A news release on the Kings Bay Plowshares Facebook page said the group got onto the St. Marys base, carrying hammers and "baby bottles of their own blood." The group, which is opposed to nuclear weapons and advocates active resistance to war, tried to convert weapons of mass destruction, the release said. Kings Bay public affairs office spokesman Scott Bassett said at the time that no personnel or facilities were ever threatened but said the bases security measures were being reviewed after the protesters were able to sneak onto the base. Kings Bay is the Navys Atlantic Ocean Trident port with six ballistic missile subs and two guided missile subs.

ATLANTA A lawyer for the family of Ahmaud Arbery said Monday that a federal prosecutor told the slain man's mother federal officials are investigating potential misconduct by local officials who handled the case. Lawyer Lee Merritt said U.S. Attorney Bobby Christine, whose jurisdiction includes southern Georgia, met with him and Arbery's mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, on Thursday. They were taken into custody less than two days after the case was handed over to GBI. The elder McMichael worked as an investigator for Johnson, the Brunswick Circuit District Attorney, before retiring a year ago. Because of that, Johnson stepped away from the case, asking Carr to appoint Waycross Circuit District Attorney George Barnhill to replace her.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A South Georgia pharmacist is facing up to five years in prison after admitting that she lied about filling prescriptions for doctors who were prescribing high volumes of opioids and other controlled substances. Janice Ann Colter, 62, of Darien, entered a guilty plea to false statements relating to health care matters, according to Bobby Christine, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. In addition to prison time, Colter faces three years of supervised release and substantial fines and restitution. "As the opioid crisis has burned across our nation, unethical medical professionals have poured fuel on the raging fire of addiction," Christine said. As part of her guilty plea, Colter admitted to lying about filling prescriptions written by high-volume prescribers of opioids and other controlled substances.
