In addition to restoring the women’s equestrian and women’s fencing teams to varsity status, the sides also said that a 1998 legal agreement ensuring gender equity in varsity sports at Brown would end on Aug. 31, 2024. Lynette Labinger, lead attorney for the student-athletes, called the proposed settlement bittersweet because they were not able to save all five women’s sports. Brown said it would add co-ed and women’s varsity sailing teams to maintain gender balance. The 1998 agreement had stemmed from a legal challenge to Brown’s decision to cut women’s gymnastics and volleyball in the eary 1990s.

The Ivy League school this year announced it was cutting several varsity women's and men's sports, and reducing them to club status. The agreement stemmed from a lawsuit filed after Brown dropped womens gymnastics and volleyball as varsity sports. Brown last month released internal documents, including emails from high-ranking school officials, that Public Justice and the ACLU said show Brown wanted to undermine and dismantle the 1998 agreement. According to Martha Lizzmore, the name of the man who was shot and killed is William Brown Jr.Hes left everybody, and everybody is in a shamble right now, and theyre hurting because they know he was a good man," Lizzmore said. Lizzmore said that the day before the shooting, her son arrived at his ex-wifes apartment with police to visit his two children, and that his new wife, Ashley, was with him. Lizzmore said William and his ex-wife got into an argument and that the ex-wifes boyfriend got involved. At some point, Brown was shot and killed.

Weeks of dry, hot weather have plunged the Deep South further into a drought that's affecting more than 11 million people and threatening crops across the region, a new assessment showed Thursday. The latest report from U.S. Drought Monitor showed arid conditions worsening across a five-state area from Louisiana to South Carolina. A pregnant Mississippi woman due to give birth on July 4 was found dead Monday, days after she vanished on her way to her babys father, officials said.
