He hadn’t been in a musical since high school, but when Jimmy Smits saw the opportunity to play Kevin Rosario in the film adaptation of “In the Heights,” he was happy to check that off his artistic bucket list.

Just when a party was poised to break out in movie theaters, the below-expectation debut of “In the Heights” dampened Hollywood’s hopes of a swift or smooth recovery at the summer box office.

A street-level song-and-dance spectacle to rival the MGM musicals of old, “In the Heights” is an exuberant celebration of the Latino immigrant experience, of a neighborhood, of a teeming summertime New York, of life.

After more than a year of uncertainty and ever-fluctuating release schedules, there will be a summer movie season.
