Hasbro hit hard by tariffs just before the holidays

Hasbro added that the company was forced to post higher shipping and warehousing expenses as retailers shifted the timing of their orders as a result of tariffs. Hasbro also reported flat sales growth in the unit that includes toys for younger kids, including Power Rangers, Playskool and Mr. Hasbro and Mattel have bounced back since then and have increased their presence at other top retailers such as Amazon, Walmart and Target. But tariffs could still wind up being the Grinch that steals Christmas sales for both toy companies this holiday season.
A 'Barney' Live-Action Film Is Happening With Daniel Kaluuya and Mattel

Teen collects hundreds of Barbies with prosthetic legs
The 18-year-old and her family donated about 430 of the Barbies on Monday to Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, Massachusetts. Chloe originally wanted to buy 100 Barbies, so her doctor could give them to kids when he made them a new leg. "We've got to find a way to accumulate the 100 dolls to bring them out there," Newman said. "The whole point was to give back to Shriners because we've received so much," Newman said. Newman said Chloe has gotten a state-of-the-art new leg every year as she grows, at no cost to the family.

Mattel releases braille version of UNO
Mattel announced Tuesday that fans of the game can now buy UNO Braille. With more than 7 million blind and low-vision people in the US, Mattel worked with the National Federation of the Blind to make the game more inclusive. The deck will feature braille dots on the corner of each card, and all players call out the card as they play. "We are proud to have UNO Braille on-shelves and to be making UNO more accessible and inclusive to even more families," Ray Adler, global head of games at Mattel, said in the release. In 2017, the company created UNO ColorADD, which they described as the first card game designed to be accessible to those with color blindness.

Mattel is introducing its first line of gender-neutral dolls, which skip breasts and broad shoulders, and instead take a more customizable route. The Creatable World dolls, available in several different skin tones, come with different hair styles, different clothing options and different accessories, from long hair wigs and skirts to short hair wigs and hats. The dolls are intended for all kids and all families, and Culmone explained they came to develop this product after speaking with physicians, parents, experts and kids. Through research, we heard that kids dont want their toys dictated by gender norms, said Culmone.

Mattel launched a line of gender-inclusive dolls Wednesday, called "Creatable World." "And also as the world begins the celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we absolutely fundamentally believed it was time to launch a doll line free of labels and free of rules for kids." The idea for the line comes from concern from both parents and children about the gender of toys, Mattel said in a statement. The line consists of six different doll kits, retailing for about $44 and available in a variety of skin tones.
New 'Day of the Dead Barbie' celebrates Mexican holiday
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - There's about to be a new Barbie doll on the shelves, with flowers on her dress and a skull painted on her face. It's the Dia de los Muertos Barbie, or Day of the Dead Barbie. The collectible doll, which will be released on Thursday, celebrates the annual Mexican festival, in which people honor their departed loved ones. The $75 doll "honors the traditions, symbols and rituals often seen throughout this time," said Mattel, the toy company that owns the Barbie brand. Her face is painted with a skull -- a popular practice during the festival, when revelers dress up in colorful costumes and hold parades.
Rosa Parks, Sally Ride get their own Barbie dolls

Mattel is honoring Rosa Parks and Sally Ride with their very own Barbie dolls. Rosa Parks was an American activist known as the Mother of the Modern Civil Rights Movement and Sally Ride was the first American woman -- and youngest American -- to fly in space. "Both Sally Ride and Rosa Parks made the world better for future generations of girls," a Mattel spokesperson told CNN. Showing girls more role models, historical and present, and telling their stories can help close that gap.
'Masters of the Universe' gets reboot on Netflix

Mattel shares plunge after anonymous whistleblower letter

Chris Sinclair stepped down in 2017 and was replaced by Margo Georgiadis, who Mattel hired from Google to help Mattel focus more on high-tech interactive toys. MGA Entertainment, the toy company that owns the Bratz and L.O.L. dolls, has also made several unsolicited takeover offers for Mattel that Mattel has rejected. Mattel, MGM partnering for View-Master movie
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mattel and MGM are partnering to develop a live-action movie based on the classic View-Master toy. Mattel recently updated the viewers with View-Master VR, a virtual reality product, and smartphone technology. Robbie Brenner, Mattel’s head of film, and Cassidy Lange, MGM’s co-president of production, will oversee development. View-Master launched at 1939 New York World’s Fair, and became popular in the 1950's. The company recently announced an upcoming Hot Wheels live-action motion picture, a Barbie feature-film, and an American Girl dolls movie.
