With just over a month until the popular Nights of Lights event begins, the city of St. Augustine is taking steps to improve parking for those working downtown during the holiday season.

Parking fines in St. Augustine will nearly triple, starting Oct. 1, after the city commission voted Monday to adopt an increase from $35 to $100 for those who park illegally in the city.

The Fernandina Beach City Commission has approved a plan to select a vendor for a proposed paid parking program in the city’s downtown area, despite strong opposition from many residents.

A proposal from the city of Fernandina Beach to implement paid parking in the historic downtown district has gotten major pushback from the community. A public town hall is being held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall to discuss the issue.

The Jacksonville Beach Police Department said that paid parking resumes Friday, March. 15 at 8:00 p.m.
