In the three weeks straddling the Thanksgiving holiday, the rate of deaths in Florida nursing homes was 4.7 for every 1,000 residents — more than double the 2.3-death average recorded in the four weeks leading into the holiday. The COVID-19 pandemic has killed more than 106,000 residents and staff of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Nursing homes have been among the hardest hit from the outbreak, with more than 7,700 of the state's 20,680 confirmed deaths occurring at such facilities.

According to the CEO of Florida’s Assisted Living Association, Veronica Catoe, during next weeks expected vaccinations nursing homes will go first and then assisted living facilities in the following weeks. “The day after Christmas to probably Jan. 4 is going to probably be the dates, you’ll see a lot of the assisted living facilities in Northeast Florida to proceed with vaccination,” said Adkins. Jamie Glavich owns and operates, multiple assisted living facilities for patients with Alzheimer’s in Mandarin and Atlantic Beach.

Marty Wright, head of the West Virginia Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes and assisted living communities, said the state's pharmacies expect to get 7,000 doses into arms by the end of the week.
