Quigley House, Clay County’s only domestic violence and sexual assault center, said Tuesday it is seeing a record demand in services this year.

A Clay County-based nonprofit says the area has experienced an “alarming” increase in sexual assault cases, noting that the number of cases reported since July has already surpassed the number of cases in the previous fiscal year’s entirety.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime. That’s why on Tuesday, the City of Jacksonville officially declared April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and adopted the NSVRC’s theme, “Together we act, United we change.”

Quigley House, a domestic violence shelter with locations in Orange Park and Green Cove Spring, is working with survivors to help them overcome trauma with a (seemingly) simple holiday gift.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – Domestic violence can affect anyone. “In a one-minute period of time, 20 people experience domestic violence,” said Jennifer Rodriguez, director of sexual assault services for Quigley House in Clay County. Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook said no one is immune to domestic violence -- even her own family.
