Florida defensive end Zach Carter is opting out of the team’s bowl game to begin preparing for the NFL draft.

By the time No. 13 Florida’s season opener was over, Anthony Richardson had leaped one defender, thrown another to the ground and looked so special with the ball in his hands that he might as well have had a cape dangling from his No. 15 jersey.

Zach Carter might have an easier time replicating his season-opening performance than filling ticket requests for No. 13 Florida’s next game.

Dan Mullen, Zach Carter, and Ventrell Miller made their way to Birmingham, Alabama for the 2021 edition of SEC Media Days. While the Gators are the reigning SEC East division winners, these Gators were peppered with questions of change on the offense and a turnaround on defense.

This year’s SEC Media Days will look a little different than year’s past as far as the Florida Gators go. Only two players, instead of three, get to join Dan Mullen and both players are from the defensive side if the ball.

With a defense giving up nearly 500 yards and five touchdowns a game, Florida’s preseason title hopes are in jeopardy. Florida’s defense ranks 13th in the Southeastern Conference and 72nd in the country (only 76 Football Bowl Subdivision teams are currently playing). “Well, first of all, as a defense we’ve got to take responsibility,” junior defensive tackle Zach Carter said. Now is a great time for us to come together.”It’s been a weekly debacle, really, with the team’s offensive prowess masking many of the defensive deficiencies. “I think we’ll be fine.”The schedule doesn’t get much easier, if at all, with defending national champion LSU (1-2) up next.
