Every Sept. 13 the community celebrates “See The Girl Day” where they have the opportunity to raise money and awareness for girls involved in the juvenile justice system.

In an average group of 25 Florida high school girls, at least two have likely been raped, five have experienced suicidal thoughts and three don’t feel safe in their own neighborhoods.

Here’s what the study found:Black girls account for nearly half (49%) of the 46,666 girls suspended from school. Black girls represent almost half (49%) of the 1,529 girls who made contact with law enforcement at schools for incidents eligible for a civil citation or alternatives to arrest. Over the last five years, one-fourth of Black girls eligible for a civil citation in school were arrested instead. A new report released Wednesday uncovers staggering statistics for rates of violence and victimization among Florida girls, particularly for girls of color and those identifying as LGBTQ. The Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center unveiled its "Status of Florida Girls" research report, shining a light on the experiences of girls in their home lives, neighborhoods and schools. Ravoira said the Status of Florida Girls research reports are the first nationwide to identify Florida's most vulnerable girls by breaking apart the parts of the child well-being data. One young mom, who is also a teacher in Duval County, said she sees the violence and bullying firsthand.
