Lanes reopen after crash shuts down I-95 South at Race Track Road for 6+ hours

Two people were seriously injured in the crash near the Duval-St. Johns County line

All lanes of Interstate 95 reopened Thursday afternoon more than six hours after a morning crash that blocked multiple lanes of the highway near Race Track Road in St. Johns County.

As of 4 p.m., traffic was still flowing slowly and causing major delays on the first day of the holiday travel season.

According to St. Johns County Fire Rescue, firefighters responded just after 7 a.m. to the crash, which involved two tractor-trailers and a car.

The Florida Highway Patrol crash report showed one of the semi-drivers, a 62-year-old, suffered critical injuries and the 32-year-old man driving the car suffered serious injuries.

According to the report, the car and both tractor-trailers were headed south on I-95, approaching County Road 210, when the car, which was behind one of the semis, collided with the right rear of the semi’s trailer in the outside lane.

The semi veered off the road and hit a line of trees before catching fire.

The collision spun the car into the left lane, where the second semi-driver was unable to avoid hitting it head-on. The impact made the second semi veer to the right and overturn onto its right side, blocking the road.

The 24-year-old driver of the second semi suffered minor injuries. All three drivers were wearing seat belts, according to the FHP report.

The driver of the car was cited for the crash.
