A strengthening nor’easter has sparked several alerts for our area. Here’s what each alert means

Current alerts.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A nor’easter has brought several weather alerts to our area, and they remain in effect through this weekend.

Notice all of the colors on the map above! Let’s break down what they are and how they might impact your plans over the next few days.

Flood Alerts

Coastal Flood Warning.

A Coastal Flood Warning is in effect for Coastal Nassau, Coastal Duval, Coastal Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, Southeast Coastal St. Johns, Coastal Glynn and Coastal Camden through Sunday morning.

A Costal Flood Warning is issued when significant coastal flooding is occurring, imminent or highly likely. The time of each high tide can be found below and these are when the threat for coastal flooding will be the highest.

Forecast Tides.

Coastal flooding can pose a significant impact to our area. Numerous roads can be closed and low-lying buildings can flood. Make sure not to drive over roads covered in water or around barriers, you don’t know how deep the water is. Remember, the highest impacts from coastal flooding are around one to two hours before and after high tide.

Marine Alerts

Due to the high risk of rip currents along our coast through this weekend, Rip Current Statements are issued. The rip current statement is in effect for Coastal Nassau, Coastal Duval, Coastal Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, Southeast Coastal St. Johns, Coastal Glynn, and Coastal Camden.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water. These currents can move up to several feet per second. That’s why even the most experienced swimmers can be swept away from the shore. If you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Try to swim in a direction following the shoreline to escape the current.

Gale Warning.

Due to strengthening winds, our coast is under a “Gale Warning” through Sunday morning. A gale warning is issued when the wind speed reaches 34-47 kts or there are frequent gusts of 34-47 kts.

The stronger wind will create hazardous seas, which could capsize or damage vessels. Along with this, visibility could be reduced. It is best to avoid these conditions and secure your vessel from these hazardous conditions.

Wind Alerts

Wind Advisory.

Speaking of the wind, a Wind Advisory is also in effect for our area through Sunday morning.
