Jacksonville faces severe drought, high fire danger as warm temperatures linger & rain chances stay low

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – We’re really seeing that drought hang on this spring across Jacksonville and the surrounding region.

Right now, Exact Track 4D shows Jacksonville sitting in what’s officially classified as “extreme drought.” Most of us are dealing with it, and you can see that reflected everywhere—from our brown yards to some of the smoke up in Georgia.

Our rainfall deficit is huge—over 25 inches behind in some spots! The combination of dry ground and gusty winds is making fire danger sky-high, and that’s going to stick around for a bit.

It’s not just talk: you might spot smoke or hear about wildfire hot spots, especially to the north. Even so, my main message is to hold off on any outdoor burning, fire pits, or campfires. I love a cozy fire as much as anyone, but it’s just not safe with these conditions.

Here’s what we all need to remember: properly put out those cigarettes, don’t park hot cars on dry grass, and be extra careful with anything that might spark, even power tools. Let’s keep wildfire safety top of mind.

Rainfall deficit, limited showers ahead

I know everyone’s hoping for a good soaking rain, and while we do have a little moisture moving in soon, it isn’t expected to make a huge difference.

Starting just after midnight tonight and on into Tuesday and Wednesday, Exact Track 4D is tracking some passing showers across our area. These will be light and scattered, with about a 30% chance both days. It’s definitely a “chip away” at the problem, but it won’t erase that big deficit.

So if you see a shower or two, grab that umbrella just in case, but don’t expect those big, soaking storms just yet.

Above-average warmth continues this week

If you stepped outside this morning, you probably noticed it’s warm and pleasant—no chill in the air, and temperatures in the 60s out the door.

Today’s high is forecast to hit 88 degrees, a whole lot warmer than our typical 75 this time of year!

We have a quick temperature dip lined up as that system moves by, with highs dropping into the upper 60s to low 70s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

But if you love beach weather, hang tight: by Thursday and Friday, we’re right back up near the 80s to almost 90. Another great weekend to head outdoors—just remember that fire danger stays elevated, so be safe.
