Humidity returns as feels like temperatures hit 108 degrees

George Winterling's legacy shapes how we measure summer heat

The humidity is back and the Feels Like temperatures are climbing.

Thanks to George Winterling we will know how hot it is going to feel as the humidity returns to the River City. If you are new here, George was our Chief Meteorologist for nearly 50 years. He passed away on June 21, 2023. He had many contributions to weather forecasting. He realized thermometers didn’t tell the whole story, so he pioneered a way to calculate and forecast the “feels like” temperature. Winterling’s mathematical formula for apparent heat paved the way for the official heat index charts still used today to gauge risks like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. He called the formula “humiture” in 1978. The National Weather Service adopted the formula as “Heat Index” the following year.
