Jacksonville braces for intense weekend heat: Heat index could near 108, spotty showers expected

Summer sun, quick showers, and high heat

Heat index could reach dangerous levels

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Hey folks, it’s Katie Garner from The Weather Authority. I want you to know we are keeping a close eye on what’s coming for the weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued an important heads up: the heat index for Jacksonville is expected to reach between 104 and 108 degrees from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. This is when it will feel hottest, and taking care of yourself—and your pets—will be vital if you’re spending time outdoors.

We’re talking about highs near 94 on Saturday and 93 on Sunday. These “feels like” temps can be especially tough during those prime beach hours.

Spotty showers, then back to sunshine

Let’s talk about today’s weather pattern. I’ve seen a few quick showers come in off the Atlantic, especially around Jacksonville Beach and spots like St. Augustine. But these showers aren’t expected to last long—usually about ten minutes—so you’ll be right back to your outdoor plans and surf camp!

Temperatures are already heating up. We’re starting at 81 degrees in Jacksonville, with the coast in the 70s, and afternoon highs are likely to reach 89 or even get close to 90.

Most areas are expected to stay sunny, with nearly 99 percent of our area seeing clear skies according to Exact Track 4D. If you’re heading to the pool or walking the dog, plan for breezy and mostly clear conditions. Scattered showers might pop up, but it’s not forecast to be a washout—just a classic summer pattern.

Watching the tropics: No immediate threats

The Atlantic and the Gulf are clear for now—no named storms to worry about at this time. I’ll keep updating you if that changes. Out in the Pacific, the season started back in May and there’s been one named storm so far, with another disturbance out there, but again, nothing affecting us directly.

If you capture any wild weather, a colorful sunrise, or your pets enjoying the sun, we’d love to see your pictures. You can share your snaps with us through SnapJAX at news4jax.com/snapjax/.
