Man dead of gunshot wound in Moncrief-area home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was found dead Friday morning in a home in the Moncrief area of Northwest Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

A homicide detective said officers were responding to a 911 call about a shooting at 9:20 a.m. when they found a man, between 35 and 40 years old, with a gunshot wound inside a home on West 31st Street near Grunthal Street.

Police had no suspect information, but were canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses or surveillance video of the area that could help identify one. A warrant was granted about 2:30 p.m. for investigators to get inside the home. Family members appeared to be distraught and upset as they watched crime scene technicians in white hazmat suits going in and out of the home where their loved one was found dead.

Blocks away, according to police, a person was dragged by a minivan from the intersection of Moncrief Road and West 36th Street to Pearce Street early Friday morning, but a sergeant confirmed that incident was not related to the man's death.

Anyone with information about the death investigation is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
