JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 37-year-old Jacksonville man has been charged with murder in the death of a 25-year-old man who was shot during a random home invasion robbery Monday in the city’s Woodland Acres neighborhood.

Clifford Anthony Williams is accused of killing Jason Bryan Horton, who died at UF Health Hospital from gunshot wounds, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

According to police, Horton tried to wrestle the gun away from a masked man during a home invasion robbery just before 10 a.m. Monday on Dandy Avenue. Horton was hit by bullets fired in the struggle and was taken to a hospital.

Witnesses told police they believe the robber, later identified as Williams, was also hit by gunfire.

Police said they can't find any connection between Williams and the home invasion victims.

JSO Lt. Steve Gallaher said Williams dropped the gun, ran from the home and called for a ride. He was taken to Orange Park Medical Center, where he told doctors he had been shot on the Westside.

Police were able to track down the person who drove Williams to the hospital, and that person confirmed Williams was picked up at the corner of Southside and Atlantic boulevards, down the street from the Dandy Avenue home invasion, police said.

Gallaher said evidence at the scene and in the car linked Williams to the home invasion, and a murder warrant was issued for his arrest.
