Family names man shot, killed on North Shore street
Chauncey McNair, 31, shot several times in Tallulah neighborhood
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Officers are trying to figure out who shot and killed a 31-year-old man early Monday on Lynton Street, off Norwood Avenue, in the city's Tallulah neighborhood.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office found the man lying in the road off Norwood Avenue about 2:20 a.m. with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, where he died.
The victim's sister identified him as Chauncey McNair and the hospital told the family that he was shot 15 times.
Family members told News4Jax that the house where McNair was shot was not his home, and they don't know why he was there.
Investigators are searching for the gunman and checking the neighborhood for surveillance. They have not released any suspect information.
McNair's family said he has three young children and recently opened a salon on Lem Turner Road called Exclusive.
"He would spend a lot of time with them and, you know, he just loved his kids," said the sister, who didn't want her name used. "For somebody to just kill my brother like that, they don't have no remorse. They don't care about life, and it really hurts."
As investigators search for leads, family and friends are trying to make peace with what happened.
“I know my brother, he's in a better place. He was here with us for over 30-something years you know? And we're sad that he's gone, but we know that he's in a better place,” the sister said. “It just hurts me to know that I ain't never going to be able to see my brother no more -- over foolishness.”
A woman who lives near the shooting said the sound of gunshots woke her up Monday morning.
“All I heard was boom, boom, boom, boom,” Wanda Williams said. “I've been here a good while, and this ain't never happened before. Never on this block. First time, and I hope it's the last.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
