Police ID man killed in shooting on Jacksonville's Westside

Witnesses say 1 man ran from scene, 1 possibly left in damaged SUV

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 42-year-old Jacksonville man who was found dead of a gunshot wound inside an SUV Thursday morning on Jacksonville's Westside has been identified, police said.

The shooting was initially reported about 7:30 a.m. on Oglesby Avenue off Bulls Bay Highway, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Police said Timothy Basden was found dead inside a small SUV, and witnesses who saw the shooting or heard the gunshots told police one man ran from the scene and another person possibly drove away in a smaller black SUV with a missing bumper.

"We're hopefully going to be able to get more on the story," JSO Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said.

Rudlaff said detectives on scene were hearing that drug activity might be happening in the area, and could be connected to the shooting.

He encouraged residents to call police if they know of drug dealers in their neighborhoods.

A mother of a toddler who lives nearby told News4Jax violence is nothing new for the neighborhood.

"I walk him all around the neighborhood, and there are shootings and people running with guns and everything like that," the young mother said. "That’s very scary."

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
