Opening statements to begin for Markeith Loyd's first murder trial

Markeith accused of killing pregnant ex-girlfriend and police lieutenant

First of two death penalty trials he's facing.

ORLANDO, Fla. – After two weeks of jury selection, 12 women and four men are seated for Markeith Loyd's first murder trial, News4Jax sister station WKMG in Orlando reports.

Loyd is accused of fatally shooting his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, during an argument in December 2016.

Authorities said he then killed Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton weeks later as she tried to arrest him outside an Orlando Walmart. He'll be tried on that murder charge separately next year.

Opening statements started Friday morning for the murder charge connected to Dixon's death. The jury will be sequestered during the trial, which is expected to last about a week.
