JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man died after a drive-by shooting early Saturday on the Southside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Police said the 39-year-old man had just left a business on Philips Highway in a sport utility vehicle, which was “one of several in a caravan” of vehicles. According to police, the vehicles stopped for a red light near Bowden Road and Interstate 95, and while stopped, an unknown vehicle came by and at least one person inside started shooting at the vehicles.

According to JSO, witnesses said the SUV appeared to have been struck by gunfire multiple times. Police said the driver of the SUV took the 39-year-old to a hospital around 2:30 a.m. and then drove off.

Police said the man died at the hospital. Sheriff’s Office records show his death is listed as murder.

Another vehicle that was in the caravan showed up at the same hospital moments after the SUV took off, police said. A passenger of that vehicle suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, according to JSO.

The Sheriff’s Office said multiple witnesses were located and have been interviewed as the investigation continues.

Police did not hold a media briefing Saturday on the shooting.
