Jacksonville doctor urges people with pre-existing conditions to prepare for hurricane season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With hurricane season quickly approaching, it is important that everybody is prepared, especially people with pre-existing conditions and health-related illnesses.

NOAA predicts this may be one of the most active hurricane seasons on record.

Experts said it’s important not to wait until the storm hits to prepare.

“I’ve had patients who’ve waited until the last minute, and what ended up happening is that they ended up in the hospital,” Primary Care Physician Dr. Shishir David said.

David wants to encourage all patients to update hurricane supply kits with updated medical supplies and records.

“First of all, they need to have their medications in hand, which have enough refills that can last them for a good, at least, a good week or so. And also, enough power backup for the multiple medical devices that they need,” David said.

It can be hard to keep track of all medical needs, which is why David suggested keeping a copy of your medical history handy.

“That is actually very important. I tell my patients to always have a go to bag in areas where those calamities are very common like here in Jacksonville,” David said.

David also suggested speaking to your medical care provider about different evacuation shelters that could accommodate your medical needs.

He said most doctors have access to this information and can help you figure out the essential items that you need in your storm kit.
