Fernandina Beach staff working to address drainage issues as heavy rain continues to cause flooding

The city saw over 2 inches of rain Monday morning due to a stalled band of rain over the island

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – City of Fernandina Beach staff members with the Stormwater Department are working to evaluate and address drainage issues as rain continues to cause widespread flooding across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

Crews were assessing the issues Monday while a stalled front continues to bring heavy rains to the area.

According to The Weather Authority, Fernandina Beach saw over 2 inches of rainfall Monday morning due to a stalled band of rain over the island.

A Flood Watch was issued for parts of Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties until 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, Fernandina Beach officials said Monday that they are working on putting plans into place to make necessary infrastructure improvements that could help alleviate some of the issues.

The city also said that according to the St. Johns River Water Management District for Nassau County, July rainfall was 142% of the monthly average, and August was 204% of the average for that month, which is 7.11 inches more than average in one month.

“Compounding this amount of water, many of these rain events are short and intense, which can overwhelm the capacity of our drainage systems,” the city wrote.

News4JAX spoke with multiple businesses off camera who said they have experienced some flooding in the middle of the road, but most of it has been happening near Front Street by the Marina.
