The framework for an initial peace deal between the U.S. and Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz, ease pressure on global energy markets and open the window to negotiations concerning Iran’s nuclear program.
The agreement comes after a volatile final stretch.
It was hammered out by mediators who scrambled to avoid an Iranian attack on Israel. That would likely have generated a harsh Israeli response and potentially derailed the deal, but Tehran ended up holding off.
