Turning out the lights to save birds in Northeast Florida

Lights Out Northeast Florida- a collaboration between Duval Audubon Society, Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens , and St. Johns Regional Audubon-works to raise awareness, reduce artificial light pollution at night, and promote bird-friendly initiatives. Every year, nearly one billion birds die from window collisions in the U.S., many of them during their spring and fall migration journeys. On March 13, 2025, the City of Jacksonville proudly joined Lights Out Northeast Florida in it’s 5th year of protecting local and migratory birds. In a landmark step for conservation, Mayor Donna Deegan recently signed Jacksonville’s first Lights Out Proclamation, emphasizing the importance of reducing unnecessary nighttime lighting to create safer skies for birds. Mayor Donna Deegan is encouraging both citizens and businesses that they can make a meaningful impact by simply dimming non-essential exterior and interior lights from 11 PM to 6 AM during peak migration seasons (March-May and September-November).
