JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three more area athletes added championships on the third day of the state meet at UNF’s Hodges Stadium on Friday.
Fleming Island’s Mikayla Shavers had the biggest win for local athletes at the Class 3A meet, setting a record in the triple jump with a distance of 42 feet, 11.5 inches. That mark is the longest in the country this year and the 25th longest ever by a high school girls athlete.

Shavers’ mark is the longest ever in Florida, surpassing Ed White’s Tiara Swanagan’s distance of 42-8.75 set in 2005. Shavers also finished as state runner-up in the long jump (19-4).
Beachside’s Kaitlyn Brown won the 100 hurdles with a 13.77, and Ponte Vedra’s Colin Butler won the discus with a throw of 185-3.
