Hours after their boys team won their second championship in program history, the girls put an exclamation point on an unforgettable season with a 13-7 win over Oviedo to win the Class 2A championship in Naples. (Ponte Vedra High School athletics , Ponte Vedra High School athletics)
The Ponte Vedra girls made it a lacrosse sweep on Saturday night.
The double dip marks the first time in lacrosse history that a school has swept both boys and girls titles in the same season. The championship comes after two state runner-up finishes (2014-15) and also in the first season of head coach Kara Koolage’s tenure. Ponte Vedra finished 17-3 and ended the season on a nine-game winning streak. Oviedo finished 21-2.
This one was decided in the opening half. Ponte Vedra scored three times in the first and never looked back, thanks in large part to a defense that put the clamps on the Lions.
The Sharks’ defense was top-notch, holding Oviedo to just a goal in both the first and fourth quarters.
