Jacksonville Beach police have confirmed that they believe a “takeover” event at the beaches that ended in gun violence on Saturday has connections to the organizers of a similar event that also ended in gunfire at the Avenues Mall a week earlier.
A teen takeover is a large, loosely organized gathering of juveniles that’s typically promoted on social media and can quickly overwhelm the area where it happens — a mall parking lot, a popular park, or a busy shopping corridor.

"I've always taught them that they need to understand and respect police and firefighters, and they can ask them questions," Smith said. JSO and JFRD say they are passionate about being involved in the community and Saturday's safety fair is one way to help build that relationship.
