The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a tweet Thursday that the snake was coiled up inside the engine compartment of a Ford Mustang in Dania Beach, which is adjacent to Fort Lauderdale. โOur officers responded and safely captured and removed the approximately 10-foot invasive snake,โ the tweet said. The largest python captured so far in South Florida was more than 18 feet long. It wasn't immediately clear what became of the python found inside the Mustang.

The board also directed staff members to work on an agreement with federal agencies and other state agencies to give access to more state and federal lands for the district hunters. Staff members were also directed to contract with the University of Florida to find a scientific means -- from reptile monitoring to assessments of the impact of removal efforts -- to aid in eliminating pythons. The district pays an hourly wage and a bounty based on sizes of snakes to trained hunters, who since March 2017 have removed more than 2,500 pythons. Ron DeSantis called for more hunters as part of a statewide expansion of efforts to eradicate the invasive species from state parks.

The FWC designed the Python Action Team to further engage qualified individuals with python management efforts. If available, Python Action Team members are sent to capture it and prevent new populations from establishing in new areas. The FWC has an Exotic Pet Amnesty Program that allows nonnative pets to be surrendered without penalty.
