Weather pattern shifts back to winter chill as winds build and temperatures drop
Those temperatures will continue to slide overnight into the sunrise hours on Thursday. Although there were numerous severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings, only reported damage was from some trees that came down in Columbia County. Afternoon highs, even under super blue skies, will be challenged to get much above 55°. Including Friday morning, where inland sunrise temperatures will start in the 30s, there may be some freezing temperatures. Saturday will be the best day of the weekend, with afternoon highs back into the 60s.

Silver Airways to provide nonstop flights from Jacksonville to Greenville-Spartanburg
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Silver Airways will offer nonstop flights from Jacksonville International Airport to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in South Carolina, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority announced Wednesday. Beginning March 19, the Silver flights will operate on Mondays and Fridays on a 47-seat ATR 42 aircraft. FAA closes Jacksonville control center for second time in 9 days
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The federal air traffic control center in Hilliard that controls air space throughout North Florida and South Georgia closed Wednesday -- the second time the center has closed this year. Several flights in and out of Jacksonville International Airport were delayed anywhere from a few minutes to 3 ½ hours. The FAA JAX Center in Hilliard is temporarily closing this afternoon into the evening which may cause extensive delays and/or cancellations. According to George Winterling, retired News4Jax Weather Authority chief meteorologist, the air traffic control center first opened in December 1941 at Imeson Field -- also known as Jacksonville Imeson Airport. Thanksgiving Travel Tips: The dos and don’ts for holiday travel
AAA released its annual Thanksgiving travel report and said 2.4 million people will be hitting the skies for this holiday. UF Health Jacksonville’s Director of Infectious disease, Chad Neilsen, told News4Jax it is important to be prepared to travel with other people during a pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released new guidance that says a double layer mask could help not only stop the spread of COVID-19, but protect the person wearing it. Neilsen said a double layer mask is exactly how it sounds it’s two pieces of fabric. “Start limiting certain events that could be risky so particularly college students, stop going to bars, stop going to restaurants so that way you’re limiting your risk of bringing it home,” Neilsen said.

Southwest flight makes emergency landing in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Southwest Airlines flight bound for Providence, Rhode Island, made an emergency landing Friday at Jacksonville International Airport over concerns about a mechanical issue, the airline said. Southwest flight 162 took off from Orlando International Airport shortly after 8 a.m., according to Flight Aware. The flight was diverted to Jacksonville after the pilot noticed an instrument reading in a gauge that monitors the aircraft’s backup hydraulics systems, a Southwest spokesman told News4Jax. The Boeing 737, which was carrying 23 passengers and five crew members, landed safely in Jacksonville about 9 a.m., so mechanics could inspect the aircraft, the spokesman said. Flight Aware shows the flight was scheduled to depart Jacksonville for Providence about 10:40 a.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eta is bringing heavy squalls with tropical-storm-force winds onshore as it tracks northeast across Northeast Florida. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday expanded a state of emergency and asked President Donald Trump for a federal emergency declaration as Tropical Storm Eta prepared to make landfall Thursday. It will be a weak tropical storm or possibly even a depression as it moves across Northeast Florida. About 5 p.m., Clay County District Schools announced all schools and offices within the district will be closed on Thursday, and all after-school activities will be canceled. The Bradford County School District said it is closing schools Thursday due to Eta.

Airlines are anticipating a spike in travel as early as next month. Police charge man with murder in shooting at Jacksonville Amazon center
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday night said a man has been arrested and charged after a woman was shot to death at the Amazon Fulfillment Center near Jacksonville International Airport. The Sheriff’s Office said Daisean Thomas Biffle, 22, is charged with second-degree murder. Investigators said that after the woman was shot, Tuesday night he turned the gun and tried to kill himself. On June 29, a 20-year-old man was killed while standing in a line outside waiting to apply for a job.

Police call deadly shooting at Amazon warehouse ‘domestic incident’
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 22-year-old Amazon employee was shot and killed Tuesday evening at an Amazon Fulfillment Center near Jacksonville International Airport and a man also shot is hospitalized. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the facility Tuesday night where deputies found the woman dead at the scene and the man injured. Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated, domestic incident. In late June, there was a targeted shooting outside the same Amazon facility that left one person killed and two others slightly wounded. A 20-year-old man who was fatally shot while waiting in line outside the Amazon warehouse to apply for a job.

TSA officers finding more guns at airports in spite of fewer passengers
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Transportation Security Administration officers found three times as many guns at airports this July than the same month last year. TSA says the rate is particularly surprising since there were about 75% fewer passengers in July 2020 over the previous years volume. In July 2019, TSA reported finding 5.1 guns per million people screened. This July, TSA officers detected 15.3 guns per million people screened. So far this year, 20 guns have been intercepted at Jacksonville International Airport including one on Wednesday and one on Thursday.

Furloughed Jacksonville airport restaurant employees could lose their jobs permanently
For example, at Jacksonville International Airport, the restaurants took a big hit. Now, they could lose their jobs permanently, as travel has not picked back up in recent months. In March, the company furloughed bartenders, waitstaff, supervisors, management and many others. The letter says if travel does not improve in two months (by Oct. 15), those 190 furloughed employees will be let go permanently. Nassau teacher, her father killed after tree falls on SUV mid-drive
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two people died after an tree fell on an SUV on the Northside just before noon Thursday, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue confirmed. The oak tree fell across the road, striking the car mid-drive. The West Nassau High School athletic director told News4Jax that Carrie Higginbotham, a math teacher at the school, died in the crash. She said that the 37-year-old’s father was also in the SUV and died. The high school posted on Facebook:Drivers following behind the car say they were horrified.

Sizzling Tuesday temperatures cooled by gusty thunderstorm winds

TSA intercepts gun at Jacksonville International Airport
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A gun was intercepted by security at Jacksonville International Airport over the weekend. The gun found Saturday was one of six firearms confiscated in six days at airports throughout Florida, according to the Transportation Security Administration. Thats why the agency is reminding travelers to pay attention to whats inside their luggage and pockets, so they can move safely through security checkpoints without stopping for extra searches. If a gun is brought to the TSA screening checkpoint, the passenger will be interviewed by police and may be going to jail instead of to their desired destination, a TSA spokesperson said. TSA officers have intercepted 141 guns throughout Florida this year, including 12 in Jacksonville.

Coronavirus puts brakes on plans for Jacksonville airport expansion
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Since the coronavirus pandemic hit, passenger traffic at Jacksonville International Airport dropped a whopping 95%. That put the brakes on plans for major airport expansion. It would have allowed new flights to land and take off at JAX, increase passenger traffic and even include flights to Europe. So, thats going to be a tough act to follow. The Jacksonville Aviation Authority launched a new program aimed at protecting the health and safety of passengers traveling through Jacksonville International Airport ahead of the summer travel season. The new initiative, called JAX Airport Cares means travelers should expect to see changes if they head to the airport. Mandatory temperature checks for JAA employees: JAA employees are required to have temperature screening conducted prior to starting work shifts. "Keep possession of your boarding pass. Place the boarding pass over the scanner, then show your boarding pass and ID to the TSA officer, said Brian Cahill, Transportation Security Administration federal security director for northern Florida.

Rainfall prompts temporary flooding in St Johns, Flagler
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. A low pressure off of the coastline of Florida is dragging waves of rainfall up through our area, especially along the coastal counties. Three inches of rainfall reported on Watson Road in St. Augustine Shores, resulting in minor flooding on US 1. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible this afternoon and the heaviest rain will move up the coast. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin in the warning area. Some locations that will experience flooding include Palm Coast, Bunnell, Saint Augustine Beach, Marineland, Crescent Beach, Butler Beach, St. Augustine Shores, Dupont Center and Espanola.
