A joint investigation by News4JAX and The Florida Trib is raising new questions about whether Jacksonville City Council attorney Jason Teal is stretching the limits of his authority as the council’s legislative counsel.

The Duval DOGE committee is meeting on Tuesday at 11 a.m. to get an update from The Bailey Group on the city’s Group Health Plan and the 2% lapse.

As expected, every city council member voted yes to approve the special election, but council members also had questions for General Counsel Jason Teal. Some wondering why the city’s top lawyer is saying the sheriff did not vacate the office until four days ago, June 2, when it was clear he moved out of Jacksonville a year ago.

The lawyer for the city of Jacksonville drafted what would have been a legally binding opinion that found Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams vacated his office when he moved from Duval County to Nassau County last year.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville motel that has been a magnet for violent crime, including eight deadly shootings this year, has been shut down. He noted that the city is giving motel residents until Thursday to clear out, and they’ll be given assistance. “I think we could’ve declared this a public nuisance under a city ordinance sometime ago,” State Sen. Audrey Gibson of Jacksonville told News4Jax on Wednesday. While news of the motel’s emergency closure was met with applause on Wednesday morning’s Zoom call, not everyone was thrilled about it. It’s unclear exactly how many residents will be affected by the emergency closure, or how long the closure is expected to last.
