Castillo de San Marcos reopens to public after 7-month closure
ST. JOHNS, Fla. – The Castillo de San Marcos, which has been closed since March 17, reopened to visitors on Wednesday. According to a release from the National Park Service, starting Wednesday, the Castillo will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. From its incredible structure to its cannons, the Castillo de San Marcos is a history lesson up close. Vicki Perdue and her husband were visiting St. Augustine from Texas and recalled their first time bringing their young children to see the fort. The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the United States.

AMC to offer 15-cent tickets on first day of reopening
AMC Theatres, the nation’s largest movie theater chain, will reopen in the U.S. on Thursday, Aug. 20. To celebrate, guests at two Jacksonville locations will be able to enjoy the magic of the movies at AMC for 1920 prices: just $0.15 (plus sales tax). AMC confirmed that Disney’s much-delayed “New Mutants” will debut in theaters Aug. 28, with Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” to follow Sept. 3. AMC is also offering an array of $5 food and beverage treats, including regular popcorn, regular Coca-Cola Freestyle drink and KidsPacks, through the end of October. And all AMC Stubs members will earn double points on all ticket and food & drink purchases through the end of October.
Parent group calls for Duval public schools to require masks & postpone school year
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A newly formed group is calling on Duval County Public Schools to require masks in buildings, postpone the school year until after the Republican National Convention and many other changes to the district’s reopening plan. The congregation of parents and stakeholders from around the Duval County School District formed the Duval Schools Pandemic Solutions Team on Friday and brought a litany of concerns to the school board during its special meeting Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, the School Board agreed to spend more than $4 million through the district’s COVID-19 fund to purchase and install 120,000 desk partitions. Additionally, the group believes middle and high school students should also have an option to be at school full-time, saying that school is a safe haven for many students in troubled homes.
Proposed reopening plan for Duval students includes protective shields for desks
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – During a workshop meeting Tuesday, the Duval County School Board continued its discussion on the process of reopening schools following months of COVID-19-related challenges. Part of the district’s plan includes the purchase and installation of protective partitions for desks and tables that cannot be placed at least six feet apart. To maintain social distancing, the district’s plan recommends limiting class sizes according to designated grades. Pre-K through second-grade students will be provided reusable face shields and the rest of students will be provided cloth face coverings. Disney proposes mid-July reopening of theme parks

The Disney theme park, which employs some 70,000 people, plans to begin a phased reopening on July 11 for its Magic Kingdom parks and July 15 for EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, the company said on Wednesday. Walt Disney World as well as Disneys Disneyland resort in Anaheim, California, closed in mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Demonstrators in Jacksonville call for reopening economy
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Although Florida is scheduled to start the reopening process Monday, some demonstrators gathered in San Marco Square on Thursday and called on Gov. Ron DeSantis and Mayor Lenny Curry to end the shutdown of businesses and public places now. There’s a serious issue with our economy and it’s only getting worse," said Rachel Hanes, a spokesperson for the rally. We believe all businesses are essential and it’s not the government’s place to shut down businesses and leave some open," Hanes said. The governor said he was not allowing the reopening of gyms and barbershop in the first phase.
