(CNN) - Chance the Rapper donned a red Chicago Teachers Union sweatshirt while hosting "Saturday Night Live" in a show of support to the teachers who have been on strike. Chicago teachers have been on strike since October 17 demanding more support staff, higher raises and limits to class size. Chicago Public Schools is the third biggest school district in the country. Michelle Gunderson, a public school teacher and trustee for the teacher's union, tweeted during SNL that the bargaining team was working but took a break to watch the rapper. Why Pete Davidson Missed the 'Saturday Night Live' Premiere
One fan favorite was a no-show when Saturday Night Live kicked off its 45th season this weekend -- Pete Davidson. The 25-year-old comedian was missing in action because he's hard at work on the set of a new comic book adaptation, The Suicide Squad, in Atlanta. While SNL newcomers Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman were showcasing their comedic chops, Davidson was at a special screening for Joker with his Suicide Squad co-stars, including Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and more. Davidson was seated close by at the premiere of her new film, Seberg, at the Venice Film Festival. The acclaimed sketch series added some new blood to the cast this season with comedians Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman, and the pair both enjoyed some memorable (albeit somewhat brief) screen time during the season 45 premiere over the weekend. "DNC Town Hall"In yet another SNL sketch surrounding Trump's impeachment, the show took some swipes at the wide-open field of democratic candidates with a sketch lampooning the recent debates that have pitted the dems against one another. Yang portrayed candidate Andrew Yang, while Fineman delivered a magnificent and hilariously bizarre impression of Marianne Williamson. "If you think my candidacy is going well, I'm literally giving free money to people and I'm still in sixth place," Yang's Yang jokes in the sketch.

On Saturday, SNL returned for it's season 45 premiere, and many viewers were waiting to see how the show addressed the elephant in the room. In a since-deleted video from 2018, which was shared on Twitter by writer Seth Simons, Gillis makes racist jokes about Chinese people and makes offensive racial slurs. After a public apology from Gillis that many felt was half-hearted, Saturday Night Live decided to cut ties with Gillis. Gillis later addressed his firing, tweeting, "It feels ridiculous for comedians to be making serious public statements but here we are. Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader is weighing in on Shane Gillis' brief hiring and abrupt firing from the sketch comedy show after racist and homophobic comments surfaced. After attempting to sidestep the question, Hader stated, "I feel like you shouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, you know? "I only speak for myself, but like everybody, you have to grow," he added, before seemingly sharing his approval of Gillis' firing. "After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL," a spokesperson for the show said on behalf of executive producer Lorne Michaels in a statement to ET. 'Saturday Night Live' Male Cast Members Walk Emmys Carpet Together After Shane Gillis
The Saturday Night Live cast is showing solidarity at the 2019 Emmys. On Sunday, a few of SNL's male cast members -- Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett and Kenan Thompson -- posed on the red carpet together. Their red carpet appearance comes as the NBC variety show has been under fire lately after comedian Shane Gillis was announced as a new cast member and then was fired on Monday after his past racist and homophobic remarks surfaced. "After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL," the statement read.
